Staff Notes
Staff Meeting Change Request - We need to change our Principal Directed meeting from the first Monday of the month to the second Monday. Rogers is hosting the 1st Students of Color Recruitment Fair. As a result, we are asking to move the Teacher directed day to February 1 and the Prinicpal directed day to February 8. This would give teachers more time at the end of the first semester to complete grades and other paperwork. Based on these moves we would also need to adjust the LIT directed and Department directed days. Our proposal is that these days would follow the Principal directed days. Let us know if that works and we will move forward from here.
Class Lists, Students Schedules, Changes, and Attendance Issues - As we approach the end of first semester there are a number of issues we need to address. Counselors are working to complete students schedules at this time. They are also working to balance classes. We have asked Carrie to hold off and handing out any class lists at this time since any lists she produces is very inaccurate. We are moving students hourly. The numbers and students you sse on the lists are in most cases no way close to what your classes will look like at the start of second semester. (This is for semester classes primarily) We will be getting class lists to teachers on Thursday, 2/2. This is the last day of the first semester and the half day designed as a work day for staff.
We are having a number of attendance issues with students in the wrong classes. We need to get this corrected this week so accurate attendance, grading, and class balancing can occur. Please read through the following examples and correct any to which you might be contributing.
- Two teachers have decided it is best balance their classes themselves. So, without going to the counselors and administration, they have moved students between their two classes believing that since they have the same class "type" of class (or not in some cases) and it is within the same period that it really doesn't matter.- IT DOES!
- Students go to the counselors and adminstration asking for a schedule change. As we have told the faculty this year our answer is usually not a flat no but rather something like, "We can look into that." In the end, the student goes back to their class and tells their current teacher that they are being moved out of class. The teacher trusts and believes them so allows them to go with no report or paperwork from anyone in the main office or counseling center. The teacher no longer marks the student absent yet he/she remains on their attendance sheet. In the end, the teacher figures it does not matter. - IT DOES!
- A student shows up in a teacher's class and tells the teacher he/she has been added to the class. The student has no paperwork or indication from the counselors or administration that any change has been approved. The student's name never shows up on the new attendance sheet, reamins on their previous teachers attendance. The student remains in the "new" class based on our teachers doing, "Whatever it Takes"
Please, Please, Please, verify your student lists. Only students who are on your offical attendance sheets should be in your classes. If they are not on your attendance sheet and you are unsure of where they belong, please send them to the Guidance Center to verify their schedule.
Student Schedules - We will be handing out second semester student schedules during LINK Tuesday, 1/31. As mentioned earlier, we will be getting accurate class lists to teacher Thursday, 2/2. Students need to report to their printed schedule of classes. Only students with holes in their schedules should be sent to the counselors. Also, please do not make promises or special arrangements with students for specific classes or periods. Making promises for your classes we can not keep puts all of us in difficult positions.
Schedeule Changes - Students should attended their scheduled classes. Counselors are available during lunches to discuss schedule changes with students. Please do not allow students to come to the counseling center to work out schedule changes during your class period.
Art Show
Our annual winter art show is scheduled for this Thursday, 1/26. The show will be in the Library at 6:00 pm. It will continue to run on Friday throughout the day in the Library. Please encourage your students to attend the Art show this week.
