Other News and Notes

Faculty Meeting - We have two faculty meetings scheduled this month. The first is planned for Wednesday, 6/1. We will be meeting in the library at 7:30 am. This will be our regularly scheduled faculty meeting for closing school. We will be discussing the final days and check out procedures. We will also be going over the schedule for End of Course Math exams which will be this week. The second meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 6/8. We have been asked to review with everyone the standards based grading information as we get ready for next fall and implementation in the following year.

End of Course Math Exam - The End of Course Math Exam for our students is scheduled for this Thursday, 6/2. This assessment will be given much like a typical HSPE exam. Students will be in a classroom at the start of the day and stay there until they complete the assessment. The End of Course assessment we gave last week was given is each math class and only involved those students in that period. We can not, unfortunately, follow that same process with this assessment. Scott Harrison sent out a lengthy email and we will be reminding parents about the assessment through the school messenger this week. We will be going over the schedule with everyone at the faculty meeting on Wednesday this week.

Failing Seniors - If seniors have been doing well but suddenly drop the ball and are missing class or are failing please let Tom Tripple know immediately. Also, we ask that you contact the parents or guardians of all the failing seniors prior to the end of this week. If you have already done so, great. If not, please do so immediately.

Early Withdraw - It is expected that students complete the school year. Any student wishing to leave school prior to the last day of school must meet with their counselor and an follow up with an administrator. Please contact an administrator with questions.

Other News and Notes

Final IPR Due - All grades are due on Tuesday, 5/17 at 8:00 am for the final IPR. This is the final notice to parents prior to the end of the semester. Since the semester grade is the one we place on the transcript. It is critical to have student grades up-to-date and accurate. Please review grades with your students by the end of the week. As we have in the past, we are asking teacher to make contact with parents of any student who is failing or in jeopardy of failing at the semester. This needs to me a personal contact with a response from the parent. We, in the past, have accepted email or phone calls. We will be mailing a letter to the homes of any student currently failing one or more classes.

Progress reports will be distributed to all students on Wednesday, 5/18.

Culminating Project - Sr. Boards - We will be having seniors present their culminating project to faculty and community members on Thursday and Friday, 5/19 and 20. All students will be dismissed at 10:45 am each day. Lunch will be provided for staff and visiting judges in the commons around 11:00 am (Probably closer to 11:15 am).

A couple reminders:

Please continue to help push your last students through their practice speeches. Preparation for their final boards is the key to having a successful Senior Boards. Send the names of all students who have passed to Pam.
Please send Pam the name of any student you really are struggling with based on their culminating project. If there are students you have not seen or who have not followed up and you can not get a hold of, please contact Pam or get her their name.
Thursday and Friday we will be hosting boards in most of our rooms. Please take some time to put your room in order for boards.

Student Led Conferences - Our student led conferences are scheduled for this Thursday, 3/24. This is a rescheduled event from February when we were snowed out. We anticipate conferences beginning at 2:30 and concluding at about 6:30 or 7:00 pm. Some of you may have complete all or some of your conferences already. If not, please use this Thursday to do so. Please review the following reminders:

These are student-led conferences. Please simply facilitate the conference and allow students to lead the discussion.
Groups conferences are acceptable if students are prepared. Please take the time to introduce yourself to parents as they enter or leave the conference.
Please keep track of all conferences and send a list of completed conferences to Rick Cox by Friday, 3/25.
Students can complete a conference using a caring adult other than their parent. Staff members may stand in for parents as requested by students.
Please take the time clean up your room a bit if necessary. If you need chair or any furniture for conferencing please let Scott Harrison know by Wednesday.

Master Schedule and Department Schedules - We will be coming to you on either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week seeking input as to your department requests for teaching assignments for next year. We have a short timeline for turn around. If you would please work with your departments and get the information back to us Thursday, 3/24. Curriculum Fair - Our curriculum fair is scheduled for Monday, 2/28. We will be meeting in the commons. The commons will be available for set up sometime after 4:00 pm. We will serve dinner for those faculty staying to help and involved with the curriculum fair at 5:15 pm in the faculty room. Rick Cox is coordinating the fair so touch bases with him with last minute details and needs.

9th Grade Parent Night - Prior to the curriculum fair on Monday, 2/28 we will be hosting the parents of our incoming 9th graders from both Ballou and Stahl. We will be meeting parents in the PAC at 6:00 pm, Monday, 2/28. Any teachers who currently have sophomores are welcomed but certainly not required to be here. Tom Tripple will be sharing high school requirements and answering questions as parents get ready for high school.

IPR is coming - The next IPR is scheduled to open on Friday, 3/4. Please be sure to update your grades with a date prior to this Friday. All grades are due by Tuesday, 3/8. Grades are available for parents to view in HAC by Thursday 3/9.

Faculty Meeting - Our monthly faculty meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 3/2, at 7:30 am in the Library. We will be getting HSPE information out to you as well as plans for next Monday, 3/7 for our inservice day. Finally, we will update everyone on the WSU program scheduled to be here on Monday, 3/14.

Imagine U at WSU - The program is designed to help students gain a better understanding of university possibilities after high school. Representatives from WSU will be here on Monday, 3/14. Joan Berry and Katie Hager have been seeking volunteers to host Profs from WSU in specific curricular area. We may need to come recruit as well. If you are interested please send an email to Joan or Katie.

20 Outstanding Senior to the School Board - We are at that time of the year. Please consider carefully the seniors here this year and nominate those students who you believe are the best representatives of Rogers High School. We would ask that our LINK advisors with Seniors please nominate those seniors and send your nomination to Kim Pettitt. We will be meeting as a Management Team to consider nominations next week.

Student Led Conferences - Our student led conferences are scheduled for this week on Thursday, 2/24. We are planning on having conferences run from 2:30 - 7:00 pm. Dinner will be in the faculty room around 5:00 pm. Here are a couple of reminders about our upcoming conferences.

These are designed as student led conferences focused around registration for our Sophomores and Juniors. Seniors will be sharing their culminating project with parents.
Please prepare your students with "topics" to discuss. Information was provided in lessons given to LINK advisors.
Faculty members act as facilitators in the process.
Send all sign-up sheets to the main office after completing your conferences.

If we have snow, as forecasted, we will reschedule our student led conferences to the week following HSPE in March.

State Championship Assembly - It is not often we have state athletic championships. Well we just completed a winter sports season and crowned four! Two individual state champions. Joey Palmer and Kyla Williams each won individual state championships in their respective weight classes at the 4A Wrestling Tournament this past weekend at the Tacoma Dome. At the same time both our gymnastics team and choir were awarded the State 4A Academic Championship for having the highest GPA.

As a result we will be hosting a recognition assembly on Friday, 2/25. The assembly will be at the end of the day and dismissal will be by announcement. Please make arrangements to escort your classes to the gym for the assembly after 6th period on Friday.

Second Semester Schedules - Second semester schedules are in your boxes. Please distribute them to your second period student on Tuesday, 1/25. At the end of the period please return any unclaimed schedules to the Guidance and Career Center. Any student who is absent on Tuesday may pick up their schedule from the Counseling center later in the day on Tuesday or throughout the rest of this week. Please do not allow student out of class to get their schedules. Students may stop down there before and after school or at lunch time.

Schedule Changes - There really is very little room for schedule changes. However, if a student is missing a class in their schedule please have them stop by and see their counselor during the lunch time. Counselors will be in the cafeteria during lunches all week. Do not allow students out of class for schedule changes. They may stop down during their lunches or if they get a chance before and after school.

Grades are Due - Grades are coming due. Please review grades with your student prior to submitting grades for the semester. Do not make grades a surprise. Students who are failing should be well aware of their grades by now and parent contact should have been made home. An email was sent yesterday confirming that all grades are due by February 7 at 8:30 am.

Pull out Program Reminders - The pull out program we are running in the Main Office Conf. Rooom is going well. We are only working with students who have a chance of passing at the semester. Those students should continue to be referred to Stephanie. She will then work with the teacher, student, and Matt to get things done in order help get things made up and possible provide them the opportunity to pass your class.

We realize this is a huge effort on the part of all of our elective staff. We are asking for a bit of grace in that students who are pulled out of a class in order to work in the Pull Out Program will return to class and be excused from the assignments the missed while in the Pull Out Program.

End of Semester - The official last day of the Semester is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 1. That day is scheduled as an early dismissal for all secondary schools. School will be dismissed at 10:45 am. Teachers will have a chance to complete grades and get ready for second semester. We have no meetings planned for that day as it is teacher directed time.

Special Olympics Game and Pack the Gym - Our annual Special Olympics Basketball Game is scheduled for next Monday, January 24. The students have scheduled a "Pack the Gym" night. Please encourage your students to attend the game and be a part of this event. The game starts at 7:00 pm

Martin Luther King Assembly - Our annual Martin Luther King Assembly will be this Thursday, 1/13. Students will be released by announcement to the gym at about 10:40 or shortly after second period. The assembly will be about 30 min. Please remind your students about the nature of this assembly and proper assembly behavior.

Contacting Parents - Please be diligent about contacting the parents of those students who are currently failing or may be in jeopardy of failing your class at the semester. Post grades often as we head down the stretch of the final part of this first semester. Contact with parents must me in the form of phone calls or emails.

Faculty Meeting - We have a faculty meeting scheduled for this Wednesday, 1/12. We will be meeting in the library to discuss our going live with a new online pay stub system. It should be short since your pay stub doesn't have much to it. Anyway, someone from the business office will be up. The other thing we are doing is working on the district math improvement plan program John Parker shared last month. See you Wednesday.

Staff ID Badges - We need to make sure everyone has a current ID badge. If you can not find your badge please make arrangements to get a new picture taken and a new badge made up through HR. Scott Harrison has worked out a deal with facilities that we do not have to purchase the replacement badges but you may want to check with Scott H prior to going to HR. Please try to get this done by the end of January.

Faculty Meeting - Our regularly scheduled monthly faculty meeting will be this Wednesday, 1/5. We will meet at 7:30 am in the Library. We have a number of items to discuss relative to our Extended Learning Opportunities we are proposing and the funding for that.

Homework Help Program Begins - Our homework help program is beginning again. We will be asking our Math, Sr. Social Studies, and English teachers for lists of students who may benefit from receiving extra help during the day with tests and homework. Students will be excused from one of their elective classes they are currently passing to help them with a core class they may be failing. Our goal is to reduce the number of students currently failing classes by the end of first semester. Look for emails from Jay and Stephanie.

End of first semester is approaching - The last day of first semester if currently still scheduled for January 28. As you work with students please keep them informed of their current progress. Please keep the parents and guardians in the loop as far as any students who are failing your classes. Remember, it is our expectation that we make contact, email, phone, or US Postal to the parents of all students who will are will be failing at the semester. The semester is the first transcripted grade for this year.

Blood Drive - Our first blood drive of the year is scheduled for Monday, 12/6. Students have scheduled appointments and should not be released to the Gym. Some students will be out helping with the Blood Drive. Please be patient as we complete what could be the biggest blood drive ever!

Canned Food Drive - Our annual holiday canned food drive will run this week (Dec 6 - 10). Details will be coming out from Scott Harrison. The food drive will only run this week through first period classes

Department Chair Meeting - The December Department Chair Meeting is scheduled for Monday, 12/6, at 2:20 pm in the Main Office Conf. Rm. Department Chairs need to make arrangements to be at this meeting. If you are unable to attend, please have someone from your department represent you.

Winter Wishes Reminder - Our winter wishes assembly is scheduled for next Friday, 12/17. We collected wishes from students last Wednesday during LINK. If you have not yet turned your wishes in please turn them into Kim. Faculty Meeting - Our regularly scheduled monthly faculty meeting is this Wednesday, 12/1. We will be meeting in the Library at 7:30 am. If you missed our meeting last month please see Scott B as we have some required trainings to make sure you review.

December Drives - We have a number of "Drives" happening in December. Here is the list and what is happening with each one:

Canned Food Drive - December 6-10 collected in first period classes. This is our annual canned food drive for the holiday season. We will advertise this week but will begin collecting next week. Competition will be through 1st period classes. Prizes for winning classes. We are competing for "King of the Can" title with the other high schools. All canned food goes to the Puyallup District efforts and remains in our community.
Coat Drive - This drive officially ended last week prior to the snow storm of 2010. Since some of you did not get a chance to turn in any coats you may still do so. The coat drive will not continue to make up any days.
Blood Drive - December 6. This blood drive is shaping up to possibly be the largest of all our recent blood drives. There will be a lot of activity around the blood drive next Monday. Students will have assigned donation times and should not be out of class other then their assigned times. Kathryn Russell will get a list of works who need to be released as well as those donated and their assigned time.
United Way - The Unite Way campaign is a district effort. Everyone should have received their United Way giving form. If you have not turned you form into Kim please do so. All forms are due by December 1.
Giftmakers - The annual giftmakers program is underway. Our ACE academy students are working with folks at ESC to provide gifts for this program. It is not a school-wide effort but several of our students are working on the project

LINK - This Wednesday, 12/1 will be a make up LINK. Our video kids have done a lot of work putting RAM TV together for last week when we got snowed out. As a result Dewayne will be showing RAM TV during LINK this Wednesday. The other event going on during this LINK will be Winter Wishes. Winter Wishes will be placed in your box to be completed as students watch RAM TV. At the end of LINK please collect all the wishes and send them to the main office. The packet you receive with your wishes will give a more detailed explanation.

Financial Aid Planning Night - Our financial aid planning night is scheduled for Wednesday, 12/1. Please remind your students about this upcoming event. It is a great opportunity for students and parents to get more information about financial aid and college costs.

Winter Tolo - The Winter Tolo is currently scheduled for Saturday, 12/4. The dance will be in the Commons from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. With the snow last week we are talking with Tanya Marcoe and her group about whether it makes sense to continue with the Tolo this weekend or postpone to January. Stay tuned....
